Descriptive Review by Heather Howe

1 Desire
- Lyrically expressive, wonderfully mixed arrangements. Starts out soft and bluesy in a very traditional way. At the chorus, it gets experimental in a nicely unexpected way. Very supportive guitar work. Lovely ambience and great opening track. The more you listen to this beautiful song, the more it grows on you.

2 Moment vs. Tomorrow - More jazzy than the first track, Laura harmonizes with Ephraim's trumpet on this one and it sounds beautiful. She uses her voice as if it were another horn. Incredible technique. Very inspiring song. Good ending.

3 This or That - The first thing that you notice about this track is the drumming. It drives the song. Love the harmonies, they provide a lovely counterpoint to the drum beat. Listening to this song makes you think that you're watching an early fifties "film noir". Melancholy and mysterious.

4 Dreamscape Waltz - The star of this piece is the piano. When you listen to the light and heavy touch, you can't help but think of the phrase, "tickling the ivories". It is very dreamlike and before you know it your mind is floating freely. You almost resent the intrusion of her voice as it takes over from the piano, but it ends up being the perfect coda to this song. After repeated listenings, you realize that this is the music that is a soundtrack for life. This song is achingly beautiful.

5 Find You - Good groove and incredibly jazzy. The Rhodes really fits the mood of the song. Recorded live and that atmosphere shows. Excellent, confident vocals that are accompanied well by the musicians. Very personal and intense and the connection Laura has with her audience is powerful.

6 You and Me - Extremely atmospheric, love the synth. Feels like you're watching the opening credits for the next 007 flick. Unique vocals that have a very Mid-Eastern texture (you can almost hear the Iman calling the faithful to prayer). The sitar is haunting and it mesmerizes you.

7 This or That - This older version is better balanced than the newer, with less emphasis on the drums. The vocal is the driving force on this track. It's a little more raw, definitely more funky. Always a treat to have different mixes of the same song on an album.

My overall thoughts...

Laura's songs are all about emotion. As good as this album is and it is very good, it merely whets your appetite and you wish you could experience Laura live. With the amount of emotion she puts into each track and way she sings conveys more depth than one might realize on first listen, she must be amazing in person. Her music is life. The musicianship on the album is impeccable... very precise yet without the rigid feel that one might expect from such exact playing. A good album which will definitely go on the "frequent rotation" list at our house. My husband and I love to sip merlot in a candleit room while we listen to Laura's beautiful music and we always end up wondering what Laura will come up with for chapter two.
